Sherry and me on La Flor beach.

After spending time at the beach, where there is no bathroom but the Pacific Ocean by the way, we hopped back on the Pelican Eyes and began out trip back. I had been a little disappointed in the lack of waves. When I went on this sailing trip in March of 2000, the waves were large enough for some serious body surfing. But that wasn't the case on this trip. The ocean was very calm.

Due to the sunlight direction later in the day, the scenery is much nicer on the way back in that on the way out. We even saw some charter fishing vessels trolling around some large rock islands about 1/2 mile offshore, making me wish, just for a moment, that I was on one of those boats or that I had my own boat at my disposal. I guess I'll just have to go on a charter fishing trip out of San Juan del Sur sometime.

Lighthouse at San Juan del Sur as we headed in.

Ideally, the Pelican Eyes trip usually puts you back in San Juan del Sur just before sunset. We were running a little behind schedule and something on the trip so far had not been agreeing with Max's stomach or maybe his motion sickness medication was wearing off. Whatever the case, I think the trip ran a little long for him.

Captain Michael came up with some sort of story about how you are supposed to see green flashes at sunset on the ocean as we came in to anchor. I have never heard of such a thing and, in any event, we didn't see any. His explanation has something to do with diffusion or diffraction though he didn't use those words.
